CBD - Cannabidiol: What, How, and Why
Updated: Jul 12
CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is one compound of 120 found in the plant called cannabis - more commonly known as weed or marijuana. Although cannabis (weed) is not new or even legal throughout the United States, CBD has become increasingly popular and accepted over the last few years. However, many people don’t know what CBD is, how it actually works and what ailments and can supposedly cure.
What is CBD?
Like we mentioned before, CBD is a chemical compound that is found in a cannabis(Marijuana) plant. Cannabis has well over 120 different types of cannabinoids (Chemical compounds) in the plant. When CBD is taken from the cannabis plant it can be created into a natural and non-addictive oil that has a litany of medical benefits.
Can you get high from taking CBD?
Absolutely not, and here's why: the Cannabis plants' 120+ chemical compounds all react differently; the “high” that people get from smoking cannabis is from the compound called THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), which is psychoactive. CBD, however, influences the body's own endocannabinoid system, which can inhibit inflammatory and neuropathic pain among others. According to a report done by the World Health Organization, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential. To date, there is no evidence of public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”
How Does it Work?
Humans have what is called the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in their bodies. This system helps people regulate different functions, such as your digestion, temperature, appetite, and others; in turn, this can affect your immune system, sleep, mood, memory, pain, and pleasure.
The ECS helps the body fix something when it isn’t functioning right!
Like we said before, CBD when taken in pure form, influences the ECS and gives it a boost. The molecules are already in your body, CBD just enhances them - which can create incredible health benefits for anyone that takes it!
Why You Might Want To Try It!
CBD has been proven to help a wide variety of health problems. It can improve a person's physical, mental, and emotional well being. Since CBD interacts with the cannabinoid receptors in our brains, it can help relieve pain and many other health problems. CBD can help with the following -
High Blood Pressure
CBD not only can help with these ailments, but can help in many other ways as well!
One of the strongest cases for how well CBD can work was in its effectiveness with treating people who have epilepsy syndromes. Some of the worst epilepsy syndromes, like Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, don’t typically respond to anti-seizure medicines; however, several studies have shown CBD to help reduce the number of seizures or stop them altogether. The FDA has recently approved the first-ever cannabis-derived medicine (containing CBD) for these kinds of epilepsy syndromes.
CBD and hemp oil are not the same! Hemp oil is from the seeds of a cannabis plant and is usually referring to hemp seed oil, which is more commonly used in food and skincare. CBD oil is from the leaves, stem, and flower of the cannabis plant.
Although CBD is full of benefits and is healthy for you, just like everything else, it can have side effects when taken; however, none are seriously dangerous. Those side effects can include nausea, fatigue, and irritability.
CDB is sold primarily as a supplement and not a medication! The FDA does not regulate the safety and purity of dietary supplements.
It is not possible to overdose or become addicted to CBD.
Health professionals and scientists are working on finding all of the benefits and effects that CBD can have for people. This oil is giving people the freedom to treat themselves in a natural way with no serious side effects, which generally you get from modern, man-made, medicines. Everyone should always be careful, vigilant, and knowledgeable when trying something new - CBD is a great alternative to pharmaceutical drugs and has many advantages for our bodies!
