Relationship Guide for Young Adults
Ah, dating! Whether you’re fourteen or twenty-four, dating can be awkward. There are many aspects of relationships that we often don’t consider–and I’m not talking about the dating advice your parents give you! The truth is, relationships take time, patience, respect, and love, no matter what stage of life you are in. Implementing these aspects into your own relationships as young adults is crucial to maintaining a healthy one! Here is my relationship guide for young adults.
Boundaries Bring You Together
There is no rush! Take it nice and slow. Enjoy your time together and focus on the present. Also, remember that you two still have separate lives, even if it feels like you do everything together–especially if you go to college together!
It can be easy to get caught up in the infatuation of being a couple, but it’s important to establish boundaries, otherwise it could lead to problems later on. When you’re still in that “honeymoon” phase of the relationship, it’s likely that one of the members in a relationship may become jealous of their partner’s relationship with their peers; this is normal, but don’t allow it to clutter your thoughts! Being mindful and respectful of your partner’s boundaries will definitely help your relationship in the long run.
Is It Love, Or Is It Lust?
Especially for young adults, it’s often a challenge to distinguish between love and lust! However, there are a few key differences that everyone in a relationship should know; namely, love is centered on the person whereas lust is focused on the pleasure. It’s important to also acknowledge that love is a commitment, while lust may be more of a “no-strings-attached” deal. It is of utmost importance that you establish what you and your partner seeking out of the relationship, and that you both want the same things!
Trust Is A Must!
Being able to trust one another is ultimately the foundation for your relationship. Without the building of trust between you and your partner, you will surely struggle to reach the good in the relationship. A lack of trust can cause jealousy and doubtfulness between you and your partner, and it can ruin the relationship.
When you are having difficulty trusting your partner, speak to them and express your concerns. Communication is also key between you and your partner; otherwise, concerts, questions, and issues aren't going to be resolved reasonably.
Putting It All Together: A Relationship Guide for Young Adults
Transitioning into adulthood is hard enough, before even adding dating into the mix! Taking time to reflect on you and your needs should always be your priority, but by using these tips as a relationship guide for young adults, you can ensure that both you and your partner are following a path to a healthy bond!
Surely there are many more aspects of a relationship to be aware of, like making sure there's romance, compromise, and respect, but as a young adult myself, these are some foundations of relationships I have found to be looked over (by myself, and my peers) a little too often.
